Subtract 1 Digit Number from 2 Digit with Regrouping within 100

- 2nd Grade Math

Now that children are familiar with subtraction of 2-digit numbers without regrouping, it is time to introduce them to the concept of regrouping. This engaging subtraction game is a fun alternative to the regular worksheets that children are used to. The game involves subtracting a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number by regrouping. Children should be able to visualize 2-digit numbers as a combination of tens and ones to be able to subtract a certain number of ones from them.

What’s inside?

- Decompose tens as ones to subtract a 1-digit number with regrouping.

- Work with subtraction sentences to fluently subtract numbers with regrouping.

Real-World Application

Subtraction is to take away or take apart - to make things less. When we end up eating a couple candies from the candy jar, we are subtracting a few from the total. Similarly, figuring out how much money is left after you spent some on ice cream requires subtraction.

What’s next?

Second graders can now apply their understanding of subtracting 1-digit numbers with regrouping to subtracting 2-digit numbers. Mastering this skill provides them the required technique and fluency to subtract bigger numbers.
